Entry-level roles carry the brunt because they concentrate the most automatable subset of tasks. Senior work is insulated by judgment, relationships, and accountability.
Task-level analysis
scored 0-100 for current-generation AI feasibility, weighted by BLS-stated importance
Complete ongoing technical and occupational specialty training
Technical training increasingly uses AI-powered simulations, adaptive learning systems, and virtual instruction. AI can deliver much of the didactic content and assess knowledge, though hands-on skills practice and high-stakes evaluations still require human instructors and physical presence for many specialties.
BLS evidence: Following basic training, enlisted members attend technical schools for additional training and receive on-the-job training at their first duty assignment.
Maintain required licenses and certifications for specialty occupations
AI can track certification requirements, schedule renewals, and deliver some online training content. However, many military certifications require hands-on demonstration of physical skills, security clearances involving human vetting, or assessments that regulations require human evaluators to conduct.
BLS evidence: Depending on the occupational specialty, members of the military may need to have and maintain civilian licenses or certifications.
Communicate orders, instructions, and operational conditions to team members
While AI could draft or translate communications, military command communication requires human authority, real-time adaptation to fluid tactical situations, and trust relationships. AI can assist with routine information relay but humans must deliver orders and assess comprehension in operational contexts.
BLS evidence: Members of the Armed Forces must explain conditions, relay instructions, and issue orders.
Execute duties within assigned military occupational specialty
Military occupational specialties span from infantry to mechanics to intelligence, but most require physical presence in military contexts, hands-on equipment operation, or security-cleared human judgment that cannot be delegated to AI under current military doctrine and trust requirements.
BLS evidence: Service members are assigned an occupational specialty based on their aptitude, previous training, and the needs of their branch of service.
Lead and supervise subordinate personnel in completion of assigned duties
Leadership and supervision of military personnel requires physical presence, real-time assessment of subordinate performance and morale in high-stakes contexts, and human authority relationships that are foundational to military command structure and cannot be delegated to AI.
BLS evidence: Those who want to advance ranks need to be able lead others in the completion of assigned duties or missions.
Make tactical and operational decisions to maintain order and discipline
Tactical and operational decision-making in military contexts involves high-stakes judgment with incomplete information, ethical considerations around use of force, and command authority that military organizations will not delegate to AI. Decisions directly affect lives and mission success in unpredictable environments.
BLS evidence: Members of the Armed Forces must determine the best course of action to maintain order and discipline, sometimes in stressful or dangerous situations.
Participate in or support combat missions in defense of national interests
Combat missions require real-time physical presence in chaotic, unpredictable environments with life-or-death stakes, fine motor skills for weapons handling, and split-second judgment under conditions no organization will delegate to AI systems in the foreseeable future.
BLS evidence: Military members must be both physically and mentally fit, and ready to participate in, or support, combat missions that may be difficult and dangerous.
Collaborate with team members to achieve mission objectives
Military teamwork requires physical coordination in operational environments, trust-building through shared hardship, and real-time interpersonal dynamics under stress. AI cannot participate as a team member in military operations requiring human presence and judgment.
BLS evidence: Members of the Armed Forces work together to achieve their missions and must be able to work as members of a team, cooperating with and assisting others.
Maintain physical and mental fitness for military readiness
Physical fitness requires the individual's own body performing exercise and training activities; mental fitness involves personal resilience building. AI can provide workout plans or mental health resources but cannot execute the physical and psychological conditioning itself.
BLS evidence: Members of the Armed Forces must be physically fit to participate in, or support, combat missions and must be mentally fit and able to handle stressful situations.
Deploy to assigned locations for training or operational assignments
Deployment requires physical movement of the service member's body to training or operational locations, often in austere or hostile environments. This is inherently a physical human activity that AI cannot perform.
BLS evidence: Service members move regularly for training or job assignments, with most rotations lasting 2 to 4 years. Some are deployed internationally to defend U.S. national interests.
